2021 Mestizaje Blanco
BLEND | 60% Merseguera, 15% Malvasia, 15% Xarello & 10% Viognier
VINEYARDS | From the almost lost indigenous variety, Merseguera, these estate vines are grown organically at Finca Calvestra, at over 900 meters altitude. These vines were grafted onto existing Bobal vines (of over 40 years) where the Bobal could not reach maturity due to the altitude.
WINEMAKING | Native yeast fermentation in tank and aged sur lies in concrete and stainless steel.

“I tasted two vintages of some wines to get up to date with the current releases, as was the case with the 2021 Mestizaje Blanco, a blend of 60% Merseguera, 15% each Malvasía and Xarello and 10% Viognier that matured in stainless steel and concrete. It has similar parameters as the 2022 I tasted next to it, but the sensation of freshness was greater here. It’s very clean, precise, longer and more serious, more wine than the more immediate 2022. It has the advantage of time, one extra year in bottle, and the wine has settled and developed further complexity.” - Luis Gutierrez
TASTING NOTES | The Viognier is immediately apparent on the nose with apricot, tropical fruit and honey while underlying notes of white peach, scented flowers and citrus hints creep in from the Merseguera. The tightwire balance between the fleshy Viognier/Malvasia and taut Merseguera continue with a fresh, fruity and floral attack and an unctuous mid palate that is kept in check by bracing acidity. Truly one of a kind, Mestizaje shows its unique personality is this pleasant, crispy, imminently friendly wine.

“The 2020 Mestizaje Blanco is fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in concrete and stainless steel with fine lees for six months. It has a different profile, less exuberant and floral (white flowers rather than pollen), but it’s more serious and subtler. The palate is balanced and fresh, clean and precise, every bit as good as the 2019 but just different.”.
